Pathology Institute

The Pathology Institute at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) performs diagnostic examinations of cells and tissues obtained from patients via biopsy or during surgery, as well as cytological examinations (smears, body fluids, and fine-needle aspirations).

Institute Staff

The institute’s team includes specialist physicians, residents, and laboratory personnel.
The institute holds interdisciplinary team meetings with various departments of the medical center, which include presentations of pathology from selected cases and discussions of clinical, radiological, and therapeutic aspects.

About the Institute

The following examinations are performed at the Pathology Institute:

  • Diagnostic examinations of cells and tissues obtained from patients through biopsy or surgery
  • Cytological examinations (smears, body fluids, and fine-needle aspirations)

In some cases, a frozen section is performed, enabling rapid diagnostic results during surgery.

To establish a diagnosis, the pathologist sometimes uses additional methods, such as histochemical and immunohistochemical staining, molecular techniques to detect protein expression, and genetic analysis for mutations and other changes.

These advanced methods are performed by the medical center staff on DNA extracted at the institute from tumor processes.

In addition, post-mortem examinations and fetal autopsies are performed to identify congenital anomalies.

The institute implements advanced techniques that are continuously updated in accordance with publications from international bodies such as the College of American Pathologists and the World Health Organization (WHO).
