Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

At the Department of Plastic Surgery, abdominoplasty procedures are performed — a cosmetic surgery designed to remove excess fat and skin from the middle and lower abdomen, tighten the abdominal wall muscles, and suture the incision edges.

About Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty is a popular surgical procedure, especially among women after pregnancy. The surgery is also increasingly common among both women and men who have undergone bariatric (weight-loss) surgery and previously suffered from obesity. During the procedure, excess fat and skin are removed, and the abdominal wall muscles are tightened, resulting in a firmer, more elastic, youthful-looking abdomen.

The surgery can dramatically change the appearance of the abdominal contour; however, it should be noted that a scar remains. The length and final appearance of the scar depend on the patient’s original anatomy and individual healing characteristics. The scar may extend from hip to hip, but is usually located low enough to be hidden by underwear or a swimsuit.

Before the operation, the medical team meets with the patient to set realistic expectations and provide a detailed explanation of the procedure. It is important to note that while the surgery can significantly improve one’s appearance and self-confidence, it may not produce the “ideal” result the patient envisions or change how others perceive them. Patients should discuss the extent of the procedure with the surgeon to ensure their expectations align with achievable results.

Candidacy for Abdominoplasty

The best candidates for abdominoplasty are healthy women and men who are bothered by excess abdominal fat or skin, or weakened abdominal muscles, and who have not seen improvement through exercise or diet.

The surgery provides satisfactory results for women after multiple pregnancies, as pregnancy stretches the skin and abdominal muscles beyond their ability to return to their previous state. This can result in excess skin, sometimes to the point where folds or a “pannus” (an overhanging skin apron) form, and in stretch marks. In such cases, only surgery can restore the abdomen to its desired appearance. The surgery should be performed only when no future pregnancies are planned.

Advantages of Having Abdominoplasty at the Plastic Surgery Department in the Shamir Medical Center

Abdominoplasty requires hospitalization for one day (or longer, depending on the procedure). Because the surgery is performed at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh), patients remain under full medical supervision, with physicians and nurses available at all times. This allows continuous monitoring and immediate medical decision-making without delays or transfers. Patients are discharged only after full recovery from anesthesia.
