Breast Augmentation Surgery
The Plastic Surgery Department at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) specializes in breast augmentation, one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures worldwide.
What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation surgery is performed routinely in the department. The goal is to increase breast volume by up to two cup sizes using (silicone) implants of the desired and appropriate size. The surgery is performed only after breast development is complete, i.e., age 18 or older.
In special cases, such as a complete lack of breast or muscle development, or significant asymmetry, the procedure may be performed at an earlier age. The surgery takes about one to two hours and is generally performed under general anesthesia.
Who Is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Candidates usually belong to one of the following groups:
- Young women with underdeveloped breasts or those desiring larger breasts.
- Women after pregnancy whose breasts have become smaller or deflated and wish to restore their original fullness. It should be noted that if there is significant skin excess, i.e., sagging of the skin or the nipple, a breast lift may also be required as a separate and different procedure.
- Women who wish to increase their breast size.
The Implants
All implants used at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) are manufactured by FDA-approved companies and have undergone rigorous safety testing.
Implants vary in shape according to patient needs, either round or teardrop-shaped, mimicking the natural breast contour. The latter are called “anatomical implants”. The choice of implant type is made jointly by the patient and the surgeon, based on patient preference and surgical considerations.
