Gastroenterology, Liver Diseases, and Nutrition Institute

The Camilla Goncharovsky Institute of Gastroenterology, Liver Diseases, and Nutrition at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of patients with digestive tract and liver diseases. The institute performs a wide range of therapeutic, invasive, and non-invasive procedures, as well as various endoscopic examinations for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of gastrointestinal and liver diseases.

About the Institute

The institute leads and participates in the development and implementation of new technologies in gastroenterology under the direction of Prof. Chaim Shirin.

Over the past two years, the institute has participated in a major clinical study dedicated to implementing a new endoscopic technology. The detection and removal of polyps in the colon has been proven to reduce morbidity and mortality from colon cancer. The endoscopic equipment used at the institute is the most advanced and modern available and includes the G-EYE system, which significantly improves the effectiveness of colonoscopy examinations and increases polyp-detection capability by up to 50%. The institute provides consultations to all hospital departments for the diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from gastrointestinal and liver diseases. As part of its ongoing work, weekly multidisciplinary meetings are held, with participation from internal medicine, surgery, and oncology departments, as well as the imaging and pathology institutes.

The institute also has a laboratory that supports clinical needs and enables numerous research projects.

Scientific research from the institute has been published in leading gastroenterology journals and presented at major international conferences.

The Gastroenterology Institute is affiliated with the Tel Aviv University School of Medicine and with the Nursing School of the medical center. The institute’s nurses and physicians play an active role in teaching nursing and medical students from Israel and abroad.

More than 40 medical, nursing, paramedical, and administrative staff members work in full cooperation at the institute to provide patients and their families with the most professional and up-to-date care.

Appointment Scheduling Procedure

Referrals received by the Gastroenterology Institute are reviewed by a specialist gastroenterologist, who determines whether the patient will first be scheduled for a clinic visit and/or for an endoscopic examination, based on the medical information provided.

There is no direct scheduling for an endoscopic examination, even if such a referral was sent by a GP and/or a specialist outside the medical center, unless a gastroenterologist at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) Gastroenterology Institute reviews and approves it.

After submitting the referral, you may check the appointment and its date after 3 business days.
