Ultrasound Unit

The Ultrasound Unit at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) has been operating for over 25 years and is among the first hospital-based ultrasound units established in Israel. The unit is part of the Radiology Department at the Imaging Institute and provides services to all hospital departments and to outpatients.

Equipped with some of the most advanced ultrasound technology in the world, the unit performs a wide range of ultrasound diagnostic examinations, including thyroid, abdominal organs, and musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging for adults, children, and newborns. The unit also performs numerous procedures, including aspirations and biopsies.

Types of Ultrasound Examinations

  • Abdominal ultrasound: liver, pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, appendix
  • Testicular and groin ultrasound
  • Neck ultrasound: thyroid, lymph nodes, blood vessels
  • Biopsies of abdominal masses, including liver and kidneys
  • Thyroid biopsy
  • Fluid drainage from the chest cavity, abdomen, and joints
  • Joint injections of medications and steroids

Interventional Radiology Unit (Angio)

The Interventional Radiology Unit at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) is the only dedicated unit of its kind in Israel, built as an operational unit independent of the Imaging Institute and located above the operating rooms. This location enables extremely rapid transfer of patients from surgery to the unit and vice versa when needed.

The unit, led by Dr. Alexei Cherniavsky, provides patients with a wide range of novel tools and technologies that enable safe and effective treatment of many diseases. The unit significantly reduces the need for operations and surgical procedures. It does so by using advanced imaging-guided percutaneous techniques and expert teams that diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions affecting internal organs and blood vessels.

Breast Imaging Unit

The Breast Imaging Unit, headed by Dr. Tal Arazi Kleinman, is part of the Women's Health Center and works closely with the surgical department. The unit specializes in early detection of breast cancer and monitoring benign and malignant tumors using low-dose 3D digital mammography, contrast-enhanced mammography for screening and diagnosis, ultrasound, stereotactic biopsy, ultrasound-guided and MRI-guided biopsies, MRI preoperative localization, clip placement before chemotherapy, and more.

Conventional X-ray

Our institute performs general X-ray examinations, including chest and abdominal X-rays, orthopedic imaging, and fluoroscopic studies of the digestive and urinary systems. We are equipped with a variety of advanced digital radiography systems, both stationary and mobile, as well as three leading fluoroscopy machines.

X-ray imaging uses a small amount of radiation to create images of body regions, helping physicians diagnose disease or injury. X-rays are the most common imaging test and provide static two-dimensional images of bones, lungs, abdomen, and other areas.

X-ray examinations can help diagnose conditions such as fractures, arthritis, pneumonia, bowel obstruction, and the identification of free air and foreign bodies (such as metal).

X-rays are less effective for imaging soft tissues, so additional tests such as CT, MRI, or ultrasound may be needed to diagnose conditions involving soft tissues.

Pediatric Imaging

Pediatric imaging is a unique specialty with distinct characteristics and complexities that differ significantly from those of adult imaging. The Imaging Institute uses advanced, child-friendly X-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, and MRI technologies. The CT and MRI machines are uniquely suited for pediatric imaging, offering wide bores, fast scan times, and exceptionally low radiation doses in CT. Examinations and interpretations are performed by radiologists with subspecialty training in pediatric imaging. Exams can be done under sedation or anesthesia when necessary. Children from across the country are referred to the unit to undergo imaging using these advanced technologies.

School of Radiology and Imaging

The school trains radiographers to provide diagnostic and therapeutic imaging services across the various imaging disciplines.
The Imaging School trains future radiographers as part of Israel’s medical imaging system. The institute’s radiologists and radiographers play a central role in teaching and providing professional knowledge. The institute also serves as a clinical training site for radiography interns.

About Us

Leading Technological Innovation

The Imaging Institute at the Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh) uses some of the most advanced imaging devices in the world to enable examinations at the highest international standards.

  • Advanced MRI machines with 1.5T and 3T magnetic fields, enabling highly precise examinations. These machines include a wide bore, making them suitable for claustrophobic patients, patients with larger body sizes, children, and ventilated patients.
  • State-of-the-art CT scanners, offering high-resolution imaging with significantly reduced radiation doses. These devices are programmed to perform examinations using exceptionally low radiation levels.
  • Digital Radiology X-ray systems.
  • Advanced fluoroscopy machine using Digital Radiology technology, offering high-resolution imaging with significantly reduced radiation. This equipment enables examinations of the digestive tract, urinary tract, uterine and fallopian tube evaluations for fertility issues, pediatric imaging, and other invasive procedures.
  • A novel fluoroscopy system for catheterization, enabling significant radiation reduction while allowing 2D and 3D imaging.
  • Innovative tests in the Breast Health Unit, including stereotactic biopsy, MRI-guided biopsy, and core-needle biopsy.

The Imaging Institute by the Numbers

Each year, the institute performs approximately 300,000 imaging examinations, including hospitalized patients, emergency department patients, and outpatients.

The examinations include:

  • 220,000 X-rays
    • 34,000 CT scans
    • 15,000 MRI scans
    • 12,000 breast imaging exams
    • 18,000 ultrasound exams
    • 1,600 invasive procedures

Research, Development, and Academic Activity

The Imaging Institute conducts extensive research across many fields, collaborating with various hospital departments and with the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research.

Over the years, the institute has advanced dozens of groundbreaking studies that have improved patient care and, in many cases, saved lives. These include studies on the impact of hyperbaric medicine on various conditions, research on spine and knee implant surgeries, and research related to Alzheimer’s disease treatment.

There is extensive academic activity at the institute. Its experts serve as faculty members and senior lecturers at the Tel Aviv University School of Medicine.

Our Imaging Institute has earned the nickname "the eyes of medicine” because we often enable physicians to see what cannot be detected by external examination. We believe that good care begins with accurate diagnosis, and we do everything possible to ensure that the information physicians receive is correct and precise, enabling optimal care.
